A Review of the Good Wurst Co. in Plaza Midwood

A Review of Good Wurst Company

This review is a long time coming. Maybe I have been avoiding it because it is so rare that I enjoy an establishment therefore my vocabulary is limited to insults. Good Wurst in plaza Midwood is one of my favorite eateries in the area, if not the city of Charlotte. I’ve been to the place more times than I could count, you think I would have done a review of Good Wurst Company in Plaza Midwood sooner, or at least would have had a triple bypass by now.

It is a simple concept, it markets itself as a butcher, bagel, sausage maker. That is about right. The Good Wurst company has the best hotdogs in Charlotte and one of the best bagels. In fact, nothing that I have shoved in my gullet at this restaurant has been bad. The crowds show it. Only my desire to avoid the previously mentioned open heart surgery keeps me from being a daily visitor. As far is breakfast is concerned I am there consistently. I am not the only one, it is packed on Saturday and Sunday morning. Let me start with the lunch.

Best Hot Dogs in Charlotte

Good Wurst in Plaza Midwood has the best hotdogs in Charlotte. I can’t think of a close second. Well, maybe Vic the Chili man, but he left years ago and someone else took over for him. My go to order is a Chicago dog, it has pickles relish, tomatoes, onions, etc. I also get a New York Style (what I grew up on Sauerkraut, onions, mustard). Many times, there is a third hot dog of one or the other. They are both classics, and they are both delicious. Split down the middle, with a higher quality dog (not hard to do since most hot dogs seem to be made of racoon buttocks).

Best hot dogs in Charlotte

You can taste the better ingredients along with the perfectly toasted bun. The sausage was also outstanding, as are the fries, but I always come back to the dogs. There is no Hot dog I don’t like on their menu, outside maybe the Monte Cristo. Something about a hot dog with powdered sugar does not flow for me. That might be your thing, I mean some people like Taylor Swift, to each their own. Bottom line, the Good Wurst co has the best hot dogs in Charlotte (that I have tried).

Great Bagels Also

Now, maybe not the best in Charlotte, (I still like Poppy’s) it certainly is a contender, and they are the best bagels in Plaza Midwood.  The bagels are Montreal style, a touch sweeter and thinner than a New York bagel. I only have two modes here. Bacon, eggs and cheese or lox, Cream cheese and tomato. Both are delicious, both go great with beer. Or coffee, fine. Now that I mention it, one of the few disappointing things is the coffee at the Good Wurst co. It is cheaper than most places but needs improving. On the other hand, I do not think they really need to do anything different. Breakfast is packed every weekend. On top of that they probably employ 50 door dashers, I see so many coming and going. Really, this is the best breakfast choice in Plaza Midwood.

What not to Like

The only complaint I have is the price. The hot dogs are more expensive than most but are worth it if you truly hate your arteries. Certainly I will go to Good Wurst over the Diamond. Plus, they have a card, buy ten hotdogs get one free. I used so many of these I should carry around a defibrillator. Breakfast feels like it is getting up there. I know, it is all over the city, but when I get a bagel with lox and a coffee, and the cost starts pushing $20 (with tip). Eventually I need to slow down my visits.

As mentioned, it hasn’t stopped most people from visiting. Parking seems like a pain, even with spots in the back, I used to walk so wasn’t an issue. Also, it is on the side of Plaza Midwood that has better food but is a hell of a lot grungier. It is annoying to be hit up for money while sitting eating your breakfast. That is not their fault, but still a drawback. Really these are nitpicks and won’t stop my consumption of tubed meat on a bun.

Conclusion: Review of the Good Wurst Company

It is a great atmosphere, on the “better food” side of Plaza Midwood. The best hot dogs in Charlotte and some of the best bagels in town. Certainly the best bagels in Plaza Midwood. This is one of the few spots in Charlotte that I will recommend.
